Playing with Brilliance:
Unleashing the Spectacular

by Judith Richardson

Small Business Office Professionals and Home Office

In our organization we work with organizations creating the future – corporations, government departments, small businesses, non-governmental organizations, community organizations – and the individuals in those organizations. Organizations, for us, are a collective expression of people!

The tag line for our organization has been “Play with Brilliance” and, as we are entering our 10th year “Playing with Brilliance” is the core value of our business – it is why we exist – so we play with “being” that and “showing up” as that in all that we do. How we see the world determines our relationship to it – because we are on high alert, our practice is to focus more than observe. We confirm with the client the bigger perspective of any project and establish our alignment with that bigger perspective. We establish meeting spaces of inquiry, personal accountability and moving forward with clear agreements – all in the greater understanding of how each person processes and diverse perspectives in the room.

Any organizational change initiative leads to rising emotions that invite us to act from leadership. For us, “Playing with Brilliance” requires the application of focus rather than observing.

In our experience, organizational change brings up opportunities to focus through:

  • Excitement
  • Creativity
  • Greater collaboration through shared vision
  • The ability to dream
  • Alignment with values
  • Constructive conversations around preserving integrity and risk management
  • Feelings of fear
  • Spreading of negative narrative
  • Feeling threatened
  • Loss of control
  • Conflicted behaviors that could polarize

Some reading this would already be classifying the above list as to “wanted” and “unwanted” experiences. In our experience, all are valid catalysts in evolution – some more constructive than others depending on the response. All provide the opportunity to sharpen your ability to focus. In evolution, all of us move when something grabs our attention.

Outrageous Contemplation:
What is grabbing your attention today—how can you use it to sharpen your ability to focus?
